He has won the International Horror Guild Award (2007, Best Novel - The Unblemished) and several British Fantasy Awards (1993, Best Newcomer; 2008, Best Novella - The Scalding Rooms; 2010, Best Novel - One). He lives in Manchester with his wife and three sons.
