Voices from the Dead

According to MovieWeb, Dreamworks has acquired an original screenplay from J. Michael Straczybski called ‘Voices from the Dead’. The story focuses on Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle teaming up to solve murder mysteries in depression era New York City. (Well, no werewolves this time anyway).

Conan Doyle and Houdini

Conan Doyle and Houdini did actually meet in 1920, during Houdini’s tour of England; the two became good friends, linked by their interest in Spiritualism. While Conan Doyle gave up his literary career to travel and lecture about Spiritualism around the world, Houdini devoted himself to exposing fraudulent mediums. Their friendship only started to disintegrate when Conan Doyle began believing, with many others, that Houdini’s ability to escape and unbolt locked door was due to his mediumistic powers. Their story of their relationship would make such a great film; what a shame they have to be made to follow one of the media’s current obsessions and become detectives.
