Miss Havisham

The BBC Films backed adaptation of Dickens’s Great Expectations began shooting last month. It is to be directed by Mike Newell and also stars Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch and Jeremy Irvine as Pip. Robbie Coltrane also has a role. But in the news recently is Miss Havisham, following the release early this month of the first pictures of Helena Bonham Carter in the role. There has been some question about her suitability – complaints she isn’t old enough – but producer Stephen Woolley claims she is the same age as Miss Havisham in Dickens’s novel. I think that’s probably right.

Interestingly, the same complaints were made about Charlotte Rampling when she played the role in 1999.   Rampling commented at the time in an interview, ‘”People keep saying I’m too young … but Miss Havisham was left at the altar at the age of 21, and if the story starts 30 years later, she’s only 51. People reading the book see this ancient person, but everything at her house is so decrepit because time has stood still.”

Here’s one of the images of Helena Bonham Carter, followed by some other memorable Miss Havishams. I think Carter, while her look is somewhat predictable, holds up pretty well in comparison.

And finally, from South Park:
