The classic A Chinese Ghost Story (1987), directed by Siu-Tung Ching and starring Leslie Cheung and Joey Wong is to be re-released on April 30. The film’s original print has apparently undergone an exacting digit refurbishment. A Chinese Ghost Story tells the story of a lowly tax collector who takes refuge for the night at an eerie temple. There he meets and falls in love with a beautiful ghost. Unfortunately Ziaoquian is in thrall to  a hermaphroditic tree demon who, thanks to an immensely long tongue, feasts on the souls of amorous young men. While she usually tempts these young men to their doom, this time she falls in love with the tax collector.

The film based on a short story in Pu Songling’s Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, a collection of five hundred tales written during the early Qing Dynasty, has also recently been remade by director Wilson Yip.
