The Day of the Dead

While we are getting ready for Halloween, price in Mexico the main celebration is the Day of the Dead on All Souls Day, November 2. There’s a wonderful site with information about the history and traditions and some brilliant photographs at http://www.dayofthedead.com/index.html.

While it’s difficult to get Day of the Dead items in the UK, there is one excellent site that I’ve just ordered from: www.between-the-trees.com  Highly recommended! You can get some lovely retablos – either wall plaques or shadow boxes like this:

and some fabulous papel banners

You can also find sugar skull moulds here, and make some of these:

For information on how to make sugar skulls, see http://www.mexicansugarskull.com/mexicansugarskull/recipe.htm. And you can watch them making sugar skull on History Channels’ Modern Marvels show on October 30.
