Scream 4, 2011. Directed by Wes Craven, screenplay by Kevin Williamson.

UK release date: 15th April 2011

Fifteen years after the original Scream film came out and eleven years since the release of Scream 3, director Wes Craven and screen writer Kevin Williamson are returning to the franchise for a fourth installment of the series. The original stars Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) David Arquette (Dewey Riley) and Courtney Cox (Gail Weathers) are also returning. Hayden Panettiere of Heroes fame is also starring.

The action takes place in the town of Woodsboro, the sight of the original film and from the trailers it looks as though the story this time around focuses on a killer attempting to re-make the original scenario, plunging a whole new generation of teens into terror in the process.

Reportedly this is going to be the first in a brand new trilogy of Scream films and whereas the originals used iconic slashers from the 70’s and 80’s such as Halloween, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street as the basis for the genre rules which they were re-working and subverting, this one is reputedly going to be targeting films such as the Saw franchise and of course the endless re-makes of such slasher films that have appeared in recent years.

From the two trailers that have been released so far it looks like Scream 4 will consist of many of the same thrills and chills which made the originals so successful. I remember first watching the original film on a cold, wet and windy Halloween night back in the year 2000 and still view it as one of, if not the, defining horror films of my generation. Here’s hoping that I will walk out of the cinema in April feeling that my nostalgic cravings have been satisfied.
